Stringerarts Mari Lwyd Christmas Card (Pack of 5)
Say something a little different this Christmas, with the Mari Lwyd. Interior says ‘Nadolig Llawen’ (Merry Christmas in Welsh). Pack of 5 cards (£2.40 per card) with kraft brown envelopes.
The Mari Lwyd is a wassailing folk custom found in South Wales. The tradition entails the use of a hobby horse made from a horse’s skull mounted on a pole, carried by an individual hidden under a sackcloth.
The Mari Lwyd is carried to local houses, where they request entry through song. The householders attempt to deny them entry, again through song, and the two sides would continue their responses to one another in this manner.
If the householders eventually relented, the team are permitted entry and given food and drink.
