This scene depicts the Norse Myth of two Ravens. Hugin and Munin (pronounced “HOO-gin” and “MOO-nin”; who are helping spirits of the god Odin.
Two ravens sit on his (Odin’s) shoulders and whisper all the news which they see and hear into his ear; they are called Huginn and Muninn. He sends them out in the morning to fly around the whole world, and by breakfast they are back again. Thus, he finds out many new things and this is why he is called ‘raven-god’ (hrafnaguð).
The wording around the Ravens comes from this evocative stanza in the Eddic poem Grímnismál, in which Odin says:
Hugin and Munin
Fly every day
Over all the world;
I worry for Hugin
That he might not return,
But I worry more for Munin.
Hugin (Old Norse Huginn) comes from the word hugr, “thought.” Munin (Old Norse Muninn) comes from the word munr, which is more difficult to translate, but can encompass the concepts of “thought,” “desire,” and “emotion.” (The two ravens’ names are often translated as “Thought” and “Memory” in popular works on Norse mythology.
Also the symbolism of the eye: Odin, leader of the gods, is defined by only having one eye after sacrificing the other eye to gain cosmic wisdom, which was his constant goal throughout mythology.
This image comes as an A5 size heavyweight art print on a 300gsm recycled board.
