Plague Doctor Back Patch – black metal back patch, goth back patch, heavy metal patch, death metal patches, black magic patch, medieval art
Based on a woodcut from the 15th century, this is the earliest known depiction of a ‘Plague Doctor’, a sinister image but the beak was actually filled with herbs thought to cleanse the air so the doctor could tend to their patient. Human Skull original charcoal drawing
Human skull drawing in charcoal pencil on fine art paper. Part of the magic of this image was the technique used to create the photograph I worked from. I built a dark box especially for this project which allowed me to control light and shadow, then photographed the skull reflected in a black mirror. That gave me the dramatic shadows which highlighted the unique features of this particular skull.

This little stunner is a chameleon skull which I drew in in charcoal pencil on watercolour paper. I photographed the skull in my home built dark box, back lit for maximum contrast and to show off those teeth. One of my favourite skulls so far.

Whitby Abbey in the Snow framed print and card set.
A beautiful gothic gift set printed from my original charcoal drawing of Whitby abbey as seen from St Mary’s churchyard. As I reached the top of the 199 steps, the wind was blowing powdery snow from the churchyard wall, creating a shifting veil in front of the abbey ruins.

Dracula fans will be familiar with the silhouette of Whitby abbey and the beautiful churchyard of St Mary’s that sit on the headland. I was lucky to be here during a couple of rare snow days and took photographs of the church and the wooden pilings down on the beach to draw from. My original charcoal studies have been printed onto quality blank cards.
