Season’s Beatings – Krampus – Gold & Red on Black
Have you been naughty or nice this year? You will know which should this fellow head your way, a lump of coal is the mildest punishment, a thrashing with a bundle of sticks let’s you know that thing you did was pretty bad, a ride in the basket shows that thing was truly unforgivable and you should prepare yourself for being feasted upon by St Nicholas’ hellish companion, the Krampus.
An Alpine Christmas figure of the devil variety, this one eats really naughty kids and serve as a deterrent for bad behaviour, a house visit from the Christmas saint and devil or parades still happen in areas of Austria, German and the Alps. I have made a making of this print for patrons on Patreon should this be of interest, find me under GurdyBird!
More colour combinations are on the way, red ink on white paper, black ink on red paper, and other possibilities! Black on white is available from this shop! Krampus is a way of life, so please bare with me for these variations.

Dr Theobald the Rat Plague Doctor – Linoprint
Based on the characters of Montol Festival’s guise guild of quack doctors, The Splendid League of Physicians, most of whom are known as Dr. Theobald. Found within the tricorn of Dr Theobald Ph.D, the founder, is a small rat wearing his own tricorn and beaked mask. The Splendid League of Physicians is an equal opportunities employer and that young Dr. Theobald, here, happens to be a rat serves to stop the black death almost at the root of the problem. Here he has been immortalised with his robe, physicians’ cane and doctors’ bag.

The Witch – Full Colour Lino Print – Hand Coloured – Gold –
Inspired by the old woodcuts depicted the shenanigans of the sorts of witches found in old chapbooks, but coloured using similar colours found in illuminated manuscripts, with lustrous gold details. Surrounded by many eyes, possibly of spirits, familiars or supernatural agents. This was great fun to do, and is fairly dinky but striking.
Please be aware colours may differ slightly to this digital image.

September’s End – Limited Edition – Lino print Original
Legend has it that when Michael cast the Devil out of Heaven, he landed backside first into a blackberry bush. This incident is the root of the superstition that Blackberries should be plucked and eaten before the 29th September (known as Michaelmas) as any left hanging from the thorny stems following this date are defiled by the Devil in the form of him spitting upon the, placing his foot on them or in this case by passing water over them, in memorial rage at his sore landing.

Westward Leading – We Three Kings – Angel Flying a UFO – Lino print
A slight detour from the Devil work I do, ’ Westward Leading is taken from the Christmas Carol “We Three Kings” and I like the idea of the figures of angels and demons actually being aliens, so the thought of an angel landing in a spaceship made me consider why anyone would be scared seeing one in Biblical times. Wouldn’t you be? In this thought, this Angel is the “Star of Wonder”, leading the three wise men to Bethlehem, at the birth of Christ. The colour version has been lovingly hand painted in acrylic inks, paints and has a gorgeous shimmering gold finish, colours may not be exact to this image. It is also available in black and white in this shop as well as in Greeting Card form.

La Bruja – Black and White – Limited Edition – Witch Lino print
Inspired by historical imagery of witches and demons frolicking together, with illuminated manuscripts as another source of inspiration, I also like modern captures of unusual things caught on film, whether real or not or hereby unexplained, a video of something that looks like a stereotypically historical depiction of a witch caught my imagination and spurred on this image. As this video referred to what was captured in Spanish, “La Bruja”, I kept the title.
Also available in full colour.

Reverend Dodge Driving a Devil out of the Parish – Lino Print
This image depicts the Rev. Richard Dodge, Parson of Talland in Cornwall, doing what he was famous for. He was parson of Talland from 1713 until he died aged 93 in 1747, and was widely reputed to be able to raise the dead, lay ghosts to rest and he was also believed to be able to exorcise devils from places and used a horsewhip in carrying out these tasks.
People were often fearful of meeting him in the dead of night, as no doubt, a spirit or demon would also be in close range, but it is also believed that he courted these attitudes as he could have been involved with smuggling and wanted to keep the way free to assist the smugglers.

Dr Theobald The Astrologer – Plague Doctor – Lino Print
I am very inspired by the look of the plague doctor. So much so in fact I also make masks, and part of Montol involves groups of similarly dressed people in guilds roaming the streets of Penzance on the 21st December every year and entertaining people at the various pubs they stop in. I have made a guild of quack doctors who play music, and add comedy to the evening, with out dated and terrifying cures and questionable sick notes for those who wish to stay in bed the following day. We also have a guise beast called Ratael, a sort of mutant plague-ridden Obby Oss in the form of a rat.
All except two of the members of the guild are called Dr. Theobald, and this fellow examines the stars from his tower to inform the other doctors if planets are aligning in a particular manner as a warning of plague. A very, very, very former Dr. Theobald has donated his body for medical research in the background.

He is just about to set to his evening business, and there will be a lot of people in need of his services tonight, as a meteor has foretold him of this news.

Winter arrives and it came in the form of this figure, who appears in the form of a Russian iconic saint, crowned with bare branches, accompanied by a stag skeleton and an owl.

The Scold – Limited Edition – Lino Cut Print – Scold’s Bridal
This piece was inspired by seeing an image of a particular type of Scold’s Bridal, (a nightmare device used to punish “gossiping” women, fixed like a metal cage on the head with a metal plate at mouth level to hold the tongue down or cut it should it move). This one has an added bell on top for humiliating the “scold”, and I believe is housed in a German museum.
The woman depicted, however, is no stranger to the bridal, and is a regular “offender”. She is new to the bell model, and points at it in exasperation and loudly but stifled says the other title for this piece, which is “A f****** bell?”

Summoned I – Limited Edition – Black and White Linoprint – Demon
Visited whilst I was in a mood in muse form by this idea of a sphynx-like beast, representing a Demon of Separation. Whether working through an end of an era, or habit, or thought process, she is here to assist. Well, I assume she is…
I’m in the process of making these, if you want one in gold on black, gold on black with glowing sigil, black on white with glowing sigil or red on white, I will be getting arount to making and listing those as soon as possible. Let me know if you can’t wait though, and I’ll get cracking!

The Littlest Obby Oss – Pen Munys – a Cornish version of a Mari Lwyd
This mini print depicts a mast beast obby oss. This one is called PenMunys, or Tiny Head in Cornish. Cornwall, like Wales, also has a tradition around festivities, documented in Cornish Christmas Guise plays of including an obby oss character, constructed as a mast beast with an articulated horses skull on top. The Cornish oss typically has a dress of tatters and appear very often are very tall, dance and run at speed, and are full of mischief. They are accompanied by a teazer who does their best to keep them under control, for everyone’s safety, but anything not nailed down or tightly fastened may find itself a tasty morsel of these beasts.
